The Baron Four (Rogue Records) ‘She’ / ‘What Can I Do’

The Baron Four – “She” / “What Can I Do” (Rogue Records RR-011) June 2023

The Baron Four are back with a brand new single on Rogue Records and what an enjoyable two-sider it is too. The top side is “She”, written by the prolific Mike Whittaker.

I’ve tagged this post with my reviews of his other recording interests, The Jack Cades, and solo project The Paper Lips. It’s hard to keep up with this lad.

“She” powers along on an insidious jangling guitar riff with rattling tambourine, background harmonies and Mole’s authentic Keith Moon inspired drum patterns.

The number reminds me of The Monkees’ garage nugget “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone”. But in place of a berserk organ break, The Baron Four introduce a wild and slightly out of tune guitar break. At least that’s what it sounds like to me.

On the other side there’s “What Can I Do”, again written by Whittaker, but this time the sound is garage meets a rhythm and blues shuffle. Yet again I’m hearing a guitar riff that is familiar, more than likely borrowing bits and pieces from mop-top era Beatles.
