The Poppermost – “Carry On Swinging” (Rogue Records RR-010) June 2023

This group from Glasgow have got to be a tongue-in-cheek novelty group? Even their name reeks of cheese.

Toppermost of the Poppermost was a catchphrase allegedly made up by John Lennon at the start of the Beatles career.

And I’m also thinking was used by one of those square Radio One DJ’s back in the day. Could have been Tony Blackburn?

The Poppermost appear to have been round the block a couple of times, they’re no teenage garage punk band that’s for sure.

Their fabricated sound is a play-by-numbers merseybeat.

They’re almost mimicking The Rutles who mimicked The Beatles. They should have called themselves The Popperutles.

Nothing too intimidating, dangerous, original or for that matter essential here.

A record to put on the turntable when you’re doing the washing up or feeding the cat.

The mixing / production is obviously D-I-Y and I commend them for that but the recordings lack any dynamic edge or thrill.

The best song on this four track EP is “A Talent For Loving” which sees The Poppermost enter their “Beatles For Sale” era. There’s some decent jangle guitar, a steady beat and easily sticks it’s head out above the other three tunes.
