The Nashville Teens – ’I’m A Lonely One’ / ‘Ex Kay One Lx’ (New World NW 6002) 1972

Here’s something I’ve been thinking about for some time . . . . “Imaginary Singles” – there must be hundreds of times when a record label released the WRONG songs for a 45rpm from an LP. Actual singles that BOMBED because they released the wrong material . . . . . all personal choice of course, so don’t hit me with your rhythm stick . . .

As an example: The Byrds “The World Turns All Around Her” / “Wait And See” would have been a spectacular folk-rock release in 1966. Or: The 13th Floor Elevators “Don’t Fall Down” / “Monkey Island”

It’s just something I’m thinking about doing on ‘Transistor Pop’, to keep it fresh and interesting. My scene will always be 45rpm MONO singles though. But I’m neglecting my vinyl albums and this would give me an excuse to play them at least once every decade . . . . .

The Nashville Teens | I’m A Lonely One | New World | 1968

By the time the very first Nashville Teens compilation album was released in 1972 they had effectively disbanded. This was a strange release on New World as it contained some old hits like ’Tobacco Road’ but mostly misses in the form of ’All Along The Watchtower’ and ’Biggest Night Of Her Life.’

The outstanding cuts were reserved for Side 2. Here, the casual listener was probably bewildered by the tripped out psychedelia of ’I’m A Lonely One’ and the strange ’Ex Kay One Lx’. The beautiful acid folk reverie of ’Day And Night’ is a pure joy, so to is the delightful ’Widdicombe Fair’.

These four songs probably date from 1968 and were unreleased at the time. ’I’m A Lonely One’ b/w ’Ex Kay One Lx’ would have made a perfect psych single. It’s a crime that they weren’t released at the time.
