The Youth | Fancy You | Wilde Beat | 2013 | First off, what a cringe-worthy name they decided to call themselves. The Youth are probably no more now but can you imagine still playing onstage with that moniker when they’re lumpy, tubby blokes in their forties and fifties.

Thankfully their authentic rhythm and beat music captures not only their ’60s forefathers but adds a certain amount of modern-day dynamism, especially in the pounding backbeat.

“Fancy You” explores typical Beat music fantasies of a girl out of reach. Hearing the exciting electric guitar, throbbing bass, rudimentary drums and anguished, throaty vocals means that you’ve just become captured by these four young lads.

On the other side of the disc there’s “Your Love”, which adds a lot more R&B into the mix is made worthy due to the mid-song freakbeat guitar break. The authentic vocals still power on through.

single liners:
What you hold in your hands is the debut release from your favourite Beat group, The Youth. Now, if you already had the pleasure of catching the boys live on stage, then you know all about their raw sound and frantic live performance. However, if you do not know about The Youth, here is their story so far.

Growing up on the windy west coast of Denmark, Jesper, Lasse and Sune spent most of their childhood indoors, listening to old and dusty records stolen from their parents. On a soul searching trip to the old harbour town of Esbjerg, the lads came across an abandoned container from the sixties, containing a shipment of instruments from a supplier in Harwich.

Protected from wind and weather the instruments had aged with perfection, leaving them sounding just ‘right’. The lads packed their belongings heading east to the capitol of Denmark to shake, rattle and roll. Meeting up with local boy David Peter, who shared their love of Rhythm ‘n’ blues and Soul music, it was clear to them all that this was meant to be. The result is what you hold in your hands and the rest as they say, will be history.

So, if you decide to buy this record, bring it home, put it on your turntable, turn up the volume and shimmy like your sister!

The Youth are:
Jesper Jensen (guitar)
Lasse Tarp (vocals)
Sune Christian Thomsen (drums)
David Peter Jorgensen (bass)

Recorded and produced by Lee Tea at the Grave-Cave Studio in Malmo.
