Chaputa! turns 100

Still Primitive | Volume One: The Legacy | (Chaputa) 2026 | This is a godlike idea by Portuguese garage rock label Chaputa! who have decided to celebrate their 100th record release with a collection of vintage 60s garage beat classics recreated by modern-day garage punk bands.

I bought the ‘Get Primitive!’ LP when it came out in 1986, which 1.) makes me feel ancient and 2.) confirms that my love of the outsider punk racket has remained unchanged for decades.

Many of the musicians taking part in this project would have been around in ’86 buying their Pebbles, Nuggets and Back From The Grave LPs. I salute their continued involvement with the inspired garage punk sound . . . what is surely the most loved musical form ever created back in the black-and-white mono world by those American rebel teens in the mid-sixties.

Some of the groups taking part in Chaputa’s celebration include veterans of the contemporary garage scene, including The Loons who deliver an inspired “Five Years Ahead Of My Time”, Sheffield greats The Mourning After nailed their performance of “Action Woman” and The Satelliters throw their attitude around with a punked-up “Born Loser”.

Greek teenagers The Sences continue to impress me with everything they release and I hereby declare that they’re now the new ‘Garage Kings of The World’.

Their version of “Green Fuzz” is phenomenal and continues their unmatched progression since the first single “Done With You” three years ago.

All of the songs contributed are track-listed in the exact same order as the original ‘Get Primitive!’ album which is a nice touch and the artwork is based on the original graphics created by Fuzztones leader Rudi Protrudi. Chaputa‘s eye for detail and historical reverence is to be admired.
