“When I Get Home” / “I’m Never Coming Back” (Pye 7N. 15950) October 1965

The Searchers | When I Get Home | (Pye) 1965 | Still on a slightly folksy kick, the Searchers tackle a medium-paced song with their usual excellent style. Not exactly the best thing they’ve done. Quite a complicated song with more vocal harmony than of late.
Flip: is more typical of the Searchers. Faster and with a good dance beat. Top Fifty Tip. (Record Mirror, 30/09/65)

An exhilarating, stimulating disc from the Searchers – “When I Get Home”. Written by Bobby Darin, it moves along at a driving fast-medium pace, and again features the distinctive and ear-catching guitar sound in which the boys specialise.

Chris Curtis and Mike Pender harmonise the lyric, with background humming on echo, and the whole effect is snappy, vibrant and full of zip. Like the way the boys go into high register at times, too.

Altogether brighter and quicker than “He’s Got No Love,” I expect it to do a little better than their last release – specially as the sentiments of the lyric are so tailor-made for the request shows.

Another quicky, “I’m Never Coming Back,” was written by the boys. Despite the title, there’s a happy feel to this shuffle shaker. Catchy melody, too. (NME, 01/10/65)

“When I Get Home” (Pye) – Bobby Darin‘s song that I loved when he recorded it done in Searchers’ usual slightly colourless way. I’m sure they’re very competent musicians, but I’m tired, tired, tired of everything sounding the same. It’s such a good song it’s bound to be a tremendous hit.
