“What Have They Done To The Rain” / “This Feeling Inside” (Pye 7N. 15739) November 1964
The Searchers | What Have They Done To The Rain | (Pye) 1964 | Written by Malvina Reynolds, composer of the Pete Seeger speciality “Little Boxes,” the Searchers warble the folksy and wistful “protest” song “What Have They Done To The Rain” (Pye). It’s lilting and melodic, with strings added in the second chorus. The rhythm is gentle and the harmonies absorbing.
I found it altogether compelling – a contrast from their previous discs, and should appeal to all tastes. One of the boys’ best yet!
Tempo speeds to medium-fast shaker for their own composition, “This Feeling Inside.” Added organ, but the beat’s not too heavy. Very bouncy! (NME, 27/11/64)
