“Emilia” / “The Fall” (Rogue Records RR-036) September 2025
The Sences | Emilia | (Rogue) 2025 | That fine young garage band from Thessaloniki, Greece are back with their first pieces of new music since their impressive ‘Better Than Before’ debut album last year.
This time around it appears that there’s been a slight change in the line-up with rhythm guitarist Rebekka dropping out and Menelaos (organ on the track “The Fall”) joining their ranks. It’s unclear if he’s a permanent member.
They’ve also retained the vintage Byrds period font for their moniker which is a welcome sign indicating that what you’re gonna get is the 1965/66 sound of yesterday delivered today!
Both numbers were written and sung by their obvious leader Giannis Vlantis, who also mixed and produced the sounds emitting from this excellent two-sider.
The top side “Emilia” is a plaintive beat ballad with ever-present organ permeating throughout the song, sustained by succinct drum patterns and incessant bass guitar stabs. There’s subtle reverb and a fine jangle-guitar break. They’re delving quite successfully into a vintage New England Teen Scene sound on this one.
On the other side The Sences conjure up a sensory overload in the form of a ’66 Sunset Strip raver. “The Fall” quickens the tempo, adds background harmonies, insidious fuzz and swirling compact organ. An unexpected prehistoric horror scream immortalises it’s reverence.
