Why The Standells Are the Rolling Stones’ Favourites

Why The Standells Are the Rolling Stones’ Favourites | The Standells certainly belie their name . . . they are content only when they’re moving! Dave, Dick, Larry and Tony are now moving around on a cross-country tour with Paul Revere and the Raiders.

The Raiders insisted on The Standells being with them, and started the tour on a date that assured the boys a place on it. Incidentally, the Rolling Stones also insisted on The Standells as the second featured attraction on their own tour. Mike Gruber, road manager for the Rolling Stones, describes the Standells as the Stones’ “favourite group”.

The Standells have had only one short breather from the current Raiders shows. They flew into Los Angeles to tape a “Hollywood Palace” appearance, with Vince Edwards as the host. After the taping they flew right back to rejoin the Raiders and, upon landing, rushed to be in time for an evening performance.

It was on the Hollywood Palace that the Standells introduced an item they feel will establish them as trendsetters. From a design on which they all contributed ideas, the Standells fashioned a mod Tuxedo!

The jacket is just a bit shorter than a standard suit jacket, and is complete with brocaded epaulets and lapels. The jacket lining is of silk and brilliantly coloured. The brocade design carries down the side of the trousers, which are held tight by a wide leather belt and enormous buckle. In the words of the Standells, the mod tuxedo is the ultimate in “long hair class”.

The Standells’ current rise to popularity started with their record of “Dirty Water”. The follow-up hit was “Some Times Good Guys Don’t Wear White”, and then, “Why Pick On Me”. Their next album will be a first. It will combine the last two hits as the full title, “Why Pick On Me, Some Times Good Guys Don’t Wear White”.

Early in 1967, the Standells leave for a working tour, in the grand manner, of England and the Continent.

The Standells maintain an office at 9220 Sunset Blvd., Beverly Hills, California, and not only will mail reach them there, the boys take pains to answer it all. Don’t just stand there . . . clear the road for the Standells!
