Dylanisms | Podcast Mixes Celebrating Bob Dylan Cover Versions |‘Dylanisms’ is my 10-song mix podcast project, building an extensive archive of (mostly) 1960s recordings of Bob Dylan songs as recorded by various solo performers and groups many years ago.
I will zoom in on the well known and the very obscure outfits who covered Dylan’s numbers, in particular those unknown teenage garage bands from USA. There are many but this list on Wikipedia doesn’t even acknowledge them.
My ‘Dylanisms’ project will be regular and will uncover everything worth hearing. It will last for a one-year paid subscription with my hosting platform RSS.com. By then, my mission will have been accomplished and the Gods shall anoint my feet with patchouli oil . . .

01 Heron – “John Brown”
originally released on the album ‘Twice As Nice & Half The Price’, Dawn, 1971.
Heron was massively influenced by Dylan as can be evidenced by their take on ‘John Brown’, included here, as well as their cover of ‘Only A Hobo’ that was recorded in 1971 but unissued at the time.
02 Harry Nilsson – “Subterranean Homesick Blues”
originally released as a single, RCA Victor, October 1974
03 Dr. Marigold’s Prescription – “She Belongs To Me”
originally released on the album ‘Hello Girl’, Pye, 1973
North London’s Dr. Marigold’s Prescription had begun as The Followers but had changed to the more familiar name by the time they signed for Pye and released their debut single in 1968.
04 Linda Gayle – “Maggie’s Farm”
originally released as a single, Columbia, November 1965
A little-known country singer, Linda Gayle’s version of Dylan’s ‘Maggie’s Farm’ should have made her a star. Dylan’s original was released in June 1965.
05 Great Society – “Outlaw Blues”
originally released on the album ‘Conspicuous Only In Its Absence’, Columbia, 1968. Taken from a live performance at The Matrix in 1966.
06 Belfast Gypsies – “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue”
originally released as a single, Break-A-Way Records, 2005
The track included here comes from sessions in 1966 but wasn’t released at the time.
07 Canticle – “Like A Rolling Stone”
originally released as a single, Century Records, November 1970
Short-lived band from Farnborough, Hampshire.
