“I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself” / “My Colouring Book” (Philips BF 1348) June 1964

Dusty Springfield | I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself | (Philips) 1964 | IN complete contrast from her previous two hits, Dusty Springfield chooses a throbbing lament, “I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself” (Philips). It’s written by the Burt Bacharach-Hal David team, composers of Anyone Who Had A Heart” and “24 Hours From Tulsa”—and it’s in the same plaintive, dramatic mould.

Dusty’s styling of the gorgeous melody is expressive in the extreme and she feels every syllable of the lyric. The treatment is solo-voice without backing group. The arrangement builds to a pulsating climax, with rumbling drums and strings.

Not so commercial as her last two – but, let’s face it, the fans are going for quality discs these days. Although I rate Dusty’s rendition of the lovely “My Colouring Book” as good as the Barbra Streisand original, it’s a pity that a track from her big-selling LP had to be used as the B-side. (NME, 26/06/64)
