The Hombres | Let It Out | (Verve Forecast) 1967

“This Little Girl” taken from the LP | The Hombres – ’Let It Out’ (Verve Forecast FTS-3036) November 1967

The Hombres | Let It Out | (Verve Forecast) 1967 | Take a lead guitar . . . put Gary Wayne McEwen behind it; set up the drums in front of John William Hunter; plug in a bass and turn it over to Jerry Lee Masters. Now line this up next to B.B. Cunningham‘s organ and LET IT ALL HANG OUT!!!

The aforementioned four—all personable guys from the Memphis, Tennessee area—comprise a group who, in the Summer of ’67, burst upon the pop music scene like rockets at a Fourth of July picnic. Known as The Hombres, they noodled around with tunes, playing, singing and writing, during their stint at Memphis High School—soon to be joined by bassist Jerry whose home was in Little Rock, Arkansas. Jerry had been a title-holding swimming champ in high school and had several scholarship offers to top colleges.

He turned them all down to pursue a musical career with Gary, John and Bill, or B.B. as his fans have come to call him. More than their music holds them together as The Hombres. They’re all fond of fishing and water sports. They enjoy hunting, have toyed with golf and are all devoted girl watchers!

They take their songwriting seriously and will compose while traveling to gigs or waiting backstage for house lights to go up and crowds to quiet down. They’re easily able to reach their audiences, largely through the original songs they write.

In them they share the same feelings, triumphs and hang-ups that their audiences are going through. So it all comes out the truth. Their success with their first record has created the demand for this album—which marks for them the beginning of a climb toward stardom, upon which they embark surefooted, eager and talented. Sit back, turn up the volume, put down the needle and LET IT OUT . . . you, and The Hombres will be glad you did.

The Hombres follow up their chart single, “Let It Out (Let It All Hang Out),” with an album of the same title. In addition to the title tune, the LP features “So Sad,” “Am I High,” “This Little Girl,” and “Sorry ‘Bout That.”

Judging from the popularity of their single, the Hombres should hit pay dirt with this disc. (Cash Box, 25/11/67)

The Hombres storming the charts with their hit, “Let It Out,” cram their new LP with soul-of-the-country Memphis sound. “Goria,” “Ya Ya” and “Mau Mau Mau” are all treated to a swaggering countrified beat. (Billboard, 02/12/67)

The Hombres – “It’s A Gas”
Another off-beat blues rocker, much in the commercial bag of “Let It Out,” the group’s initial hit. Flip: “Am I High” (Billboard, 30/12/67)

Keeping in the off-beat vein that gave them their top ten hit “Let It All Hang Out,” the Hombres step up the action again with this touch of sarcastic sensibility punctuated by a cute break with “It’s A Gas.” Chalk up another biting side from the team, one that should top their first effort on the pop scene.
