Marianne Faithfull | Come And Stay With Me | (Decca) 1965 | Now this is much more like it for Marianne – a Jackie de Shannon composition with tinkling little instrumental opening then a stabbing-type backing for Marianne.
her voice is slightly quavery in the start but she soon picks up a definite, distinct style. A good song, with a first-rate backing sound. Should restore her to the charts.
Flip is folksier and has a lot of deep feeling. This is a stylish song, stylishly performed, but not as good as the top side. (Record Mirror, 06/02/65)
Marianne Faithfull | Come And Stay With Me | (Decca) 1965 | A very good song written for Marianne by Jackie De Shannon, the writer of very good songs.
The only thing that seems to be wrong is that Miss De Shannon so obviously wrote this with her own strong voice in mind instead of Miss Faithfull’s ducky little one.
Still this is a strange record. The more I hear it the more I like it, but it sort of has no tune. For all that the backing is terrific with just about everything – perhaps EVEN the kitchen sink by the sound of it – including jumpy guitars, baby cymbals and little harpsichord noises.

NON-STOP SCREAMERS!
WE’RE well into the tour with Roy Orbison, and its going marvellously. It looks like being the best one yet we’ve done. And, do you know, the most noticeable thing about it is the reaction and behaviour of the audiences. They’re listening to the acts, and they’re showing their appreciation of what they hear.
Whether this is a trend which is going to spread, I wouldn’t like to say. But the audiences seem to be much more mature on this tour.
Don’t get me wrong, they’re still applauding like mad. Roy has to start his next song each time in the middle of the cheers and handclaps, other-wise I don’t think they’d ever stop. But they’re saving their applause until the end of the numbers, and non-stop screamers have been conspicuous by their absence.
no gimmicks
Roy’s act? Absolutely great! And all the greater because he hasn’t any gimmicks at all. He just goes out on the stage, and sings, and everyone goes potty. The Candy Men who accompany him are great, too, and the Rebel Rousers and I are having a ball with them. Quite often we all get together on stage when we arrive at a venue, and have a jam session before the rehearsals or performances start.
The show kicks off with The Untamed, who are a very good group something like Georgie Fame in style. I hope that won’t offend anyone!
The first half is closed by The Rockin’ Berries, and they’re some group. Everything they do is good, but the knock-out for me is Clive Lea’s impersonation bit.
The Untamed open the second-half with a number, and then Marianne Faithfull comes on. To be frank, I was worried about her spot with the folky type of material she uses.
But I needn’t have worried. She’s brought the house down every time so far!
The boys and I go on next, and we certainly haven’t any complaints about the reception we’re getting.
We’ve got about four more weeks to go, and I’m looking forward to every minute of it.
Complaints? None at all, except that just about all of us seem to be suffering from toothache at the moment! See you next week!
Things were really swinging at the Finsbury park Astoria on Saturday when these shots backstage were taken. ROY ORBISON faced a continual barrage of taped interviews and stayed completely calm through them all, the ROCKIN’ BERRIES were in demand for photo sessions, and MARIANNE FAITHFULL only just found time to devour some fish and chips! No wonder CLIFF BENNETT grabbed a drink while he could!
