“Body Electric” / “Adrenochrome” (CNT Productions CNT 002) April 1982
The Sisters Of Mercy | Body Electric | (CNT Productions) 1982 | Yes, we have trendy neighbours near us now and, from the barrage of Supertramp and Talking Neds that comes through the (thin) floorboards I have of late become appalled by the kind of clinging on to rock music that goes down among these young ‘uns.
They’re all either listening to John ‘I Know It’s A Bad Record But I Must Play It’ Peel, or having parties with somebody excruciating like David Bowie annoying their neighbours.
Why can’t they play tennis? Collect stamps? There is a too obsessive attitude towards rock around! I hate it.

‘Body Electric’ shows the lie. The Sisters Of Mercy, who if it matters to you lost generation are toted by reliables as (along with Black) the Best Thing Up North At The Moment, crash through this kind of wishy washy compulsiveness with the ‘rock thang’ with a track that is so loud it hurts the parts others only drape, with a mellow soundtrack for the Disappearing Years Of Our Youth.
Motorhead compared to SOM are Micky Mouse material. These two songs drill into your skull with the sort of electric persistence the Human League tried early on.
‘Body Electric’ has a line that goes, “Acid on the floor so we crawl on the ceilings!” It is enough to make High Tide’s kaftans curl up in dismay. It is a long sharp punch. You should hear it loud and go away and write a fan letter to Tony Benn or run five miles. It doesn’t smoke dope. It is athletic. Give in. (Sounds, 01/05/82)
