The Clash | Know Your Rights | (CBS) 1982

“Know Your Rights” / “First Night Back In London” (CBS A2309) April 1982

Their best single since ‘London Calling’ I’d say, with Strummer’s gruelling dustbowl vocals urging us to “Get off the streets!!” over a deliciously raw staccato beat. It’s initially impressive but after a few spins begins to sound somewhat hollow and just a teensy weensy bit facile.

I think I’m right in saying it’s lifted from the forthcoming album, which no doubt’ll be a six-record box set retailing for just under 50p. (Sounds, 24/04/82)

What a desperate load of cobblers. The same old Spartist platitudes are trotted out over a repetitive, lacklustre backing . . . I mean, who cares? Profoundly uninteresting. (Record Mirror, 24/04/82)
