The Witch Doctors | Death Ray ’63 | (Dionysus) | They were a short lived group from the L.A and Orange County areas of CA and contained ex members of The Untold Fables (Paul Carey) and The Fuzztones (Jake Cavaliere). They did, however, release some singles and an album that are well worth tracking down.
’Death Ray ’63’ is a spooky Ventures inspired organ wig-out and is my pick out of this excellent four song EP recorded at the famed Wallyphonic Studios in Pasadena.
The other stand out is their killer version of ’I’m So Restless’ which is far superior than the original from 1965 by Dutch beat group Cuby and the Blizzards.
YES, THE DOCTORS ARE IN, brewing their own special remedy of wild Rhythm and Roll that should liven up even the most lethargic of turntables. They offer no excuses, no apologies, just some very exciting medicine that vibrates round and round on a cauldron of black plastic.

Recorded at the finest single-track studio available, this E. P. captures the band LIVE at their intoxicating best. Critics have noted the Witch Doctors‘ refusal to compromise, and rightly so.
Their songs (most of which are self-penned) feature a tuneful mix of mood, wit, and honesty that has been sorely lacking from many recording acts in recent decades.
The current line-up pf Gregg, Steve, Paul, Dave and Jake formed in the fall of 1990, and immediately proceeded to create tumultuous reactions wherever they played in their hometown L.A. and Orange counties.
Several tours up and down the pacific coast and a variety of television appearances later, it would seem the Witch Doctors have created a musical juggernaut that shows no sign of stopping soon.
So whether these five young men are touring, recording, or casting a feverish spell upon their legion of delirious fans, one can be sure the Witch Doctors are in there swinging at the top with their uniquely refreshing contribution to popular music. Enjoy!
