THE FUZZTONES

The Fuzztones | Lysergic Emanations (ABC) 1985 | IN THESE DAYS of flaccid, uninspired pop, when all that is heard is pretty much a pale imitation of what has gone before, The Fuzztones come out of the darker side of New York to assault the U.K. and put matters right.

A diligent, tight, five piece combo, they have their first ever studio album “Lysergic Emanations” released by ABC Records on April 5th.

Much gnashing of teeth from the Big Apple is expected, as the LP is to be released in Britain before any other country.

Not a band to let the grass grow, Rudi, Deb, Elan, Ira and Michael will be hitting the road for a string of their live shows in April and May. Dates to be announced shortly.
Catalogue Number: ABCLP 4 (14/01/85)

THE FUZZTONES
Biography

Over the last decade or so, with perhaps the exceptions of The Talking Heads, The Ramones, Television, Patti Smith and early Blondie, there has been a gaping void of gritty ‘new wave’ from out of the U.S.

With leanings towards old influences of The Doors/The Seeds/ voodoo/R&B/rockabilly et al, The FUZZTONES are all set to blaze that continuing trail. The band have garnered a rapidly growing, dedicated audience in New York where they have won a powerful reputation for delivering fast, compulsive sounds. This partly in thanks to sharing stages or touring with the likes of The Fleshtones, The Cramps and Lords Of The New Church to name but a few.

Firming up the line-up back in ’82, the FUZZTONES five are:

Rudi Protrudi – founding member, lead vocal, lead & rhythm Vox guitars and harp. He’s played with The Dead Boys, Lydia Lunch, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. Rudi has been compared to Jim Morrison, Iggy Pop and Lux Interior (a nice guy?).

He’s interested in voodoo artefacts, collecting rare ’50s and ’60s records and Vox guitars. And comics. Rudi is the band’s exclusive artist and designs all their logos, posters etc. On their forthcoming album cover, he’ll be collaborating with colourist Adriene Roy Tollin who does all the Batman, Spiderman and Vamperella series (D.C. Comics).

Line-up:

Deb O’Nair – founding member, vocals, Vox Jaguar organ. All Fuzztones have played with Screamin’ Jay and Deb is no exception. Deb acts as business manager and sex object and her interests range from gothic horror (movies, books, etc. esp. vampires) through to collecting combo organs from the ’60s . . . but she’s mainly obsessed with advancing the Fuzztones careers.

Elan Portnoy – a Fuzztone since ’82, lead & rhythm Vox and Rickenbacker guitars. He’s engineered on most of the new material and yep, you guessed, collects Vox guitars. He likes elctronic gadgets and cheesey movies.

Ira Elliot – member who joined in 1983, drums and vocals. Has played rockabilly with local band The Drive-Ins. He’s into fast cars, fast women and fast food. Ira is also called “The Magnet” since he seems to draw a lot of attention from the girl fans.

Michael Jay – member since ’82, AKA Brontosaurus Bass. Plays Vox Phantom and sings. Likes are ’60s flicks and other films.

Somebody once said about The Fuzztones “when it comes right down to it, they have the strongest natural visual image in NYC – most of the other groups have been looking haggard lately; these folks have all that in front of them”.

Bad News Travels Fast

Last year Midnight Records released a single “Bad News Travels Fast” and a live mini-LP “Leave Your Mind At Home”. Both could be bought here on import, but for the first time there will be a whole studio album “Lysergic Emanations” this April from London based ABC Records.

People today need something this wild to test their nerve. This isn’t nostalgia, it’s more akin to neuralgia. Verily the scream of the second coming never sounded so sincere. (Feb ’85)

FUZZBIO

“The FUZZTONES are THE American rock-n-roll trashbucket at it’s finest” – Joe Sasfy, Washington Post

“FUZZTONES” are NYC’s premier psychedelic garage band of the ’80s” – Musician Magazine

“Two of the most impressive bands on the album “Rebel Kind” are Washington DC’s Slickee Boys and NY’s FUZZTONES” – New York Times

Before the first chord is struck one can sense the FUZZTONES will provide some really cool sounds. They look just right. Using vintage Vox / Rickenbacker Guitars, Vox organs and Fender / Vox amps, dressing all in black with Rudi Protrudi wearing one black glove like his inspiration Sean Bonniwell, and having an intense arrogant stage presence that is on a par with the best sixties punk bands, the FUZZTONES could sound mediocre, yet still entertain.

But they are far from being mediocre. This is a hot little group that’s worked extremely hard to develop the garage/psychedelic scene in New York. Their music is full of drive and energy. They do an amazing job with covers of songs originally done by the Music Machine, Blues Magoos, Count Five, Raiders etc . . . and their originals are equally as authentic.

They already have a substantial audience, thanks to sharing stages or touring with the likes of The Fleshtones, Cramps, and Lords Of The New Church to mention only a few.

The FUZZTONES are spreading the word of psychedelic madness and with their forthcoming releases and constant performing, it won’t be long until their hard work has paid off with a large following. You WILL hear from the FUZZTONES.

Rudi Protrudi – Lead Vocals, Vox Phantom Guitar
Deb O’Nair – Vox Jaguar Organ, Vocals
Elan Portnoy – Vox Phantom Guitar, Rickenbacker Guitar
Michael Jay – Vox Phantom Bass
Ira Elliot – Nutty stick action, Vocals
