Tenderfeet – Moody Garage Series (Back To Beat Records)

Tenderfeet – “Black Wind” / “Hold Back The Sunrise” (Back To Beat Records BTB015) February 2021

The second ‘Moody Garage Series’ release from Back To Beat Records was this one by Greek band Tenderfeet. I know Greece is a large Country so you may be wondering an exact location. But truth be told, I don’t know!

The group consist of stalwarts from the Greek garage scene. Members have previously played with The Frantic VThe Jacks and The Odd Mods.

Their cover versions are well chosen and stand up well to the originals. This is especially true of “Black Wind”, originally released by Little John & the Monks on Jerden in 1965.

Tenderfeet embrace the sombre and desolate Little John cut. They then add a slightly more up tempo pace, a heavy load of Farfisa organ and tambourine.

The results are outstanding and a fitting study to one of the very best moody cuts on the Jerden label.

The other side, “Hold Back The Sunrise” is one of those numbers that on first hearing is an immediate rush of pleasure and delight.

The original 1966 record by Ron Gray on HBR is an in demand garage psych accessory. Every DJ seemingly wants a copy for the boxes. It’s a sought after and in demand 45.

Tenderfeet have to be commended for recording such a magical tune. They add an authentic guitar break, fuzztoned backing and again, plenty of piercing organ. Would have been even better with backing harmonies and the tambourine used on “Black Winds”.

Sadly, Tenderfeet are no more. An update was posted on their Facebook page in April 2022 confirming their break-up. So after a brief two year existence the scene has lost a very good, supremely authentic, modern day garage outfit.
