The Mourning After – “Just Walk Away” / “Sweet Scotchy Rose” (Lost In Time LIT45-011) May 2021
The Mourning After | Just Walk Away: At one point during the Covid-19 lock-down years The Mourning After were releasing singles on various labels like there was no tomorrow.
Sometimes it was hard to keep up with the rate discs were coming out.
Of course, they were all very limited in quantity so it was best to be in the know and obtain these garage punk pleasures before they were gone, especially in Britain.
No one wants to obtain their copies from distant lands due to the excessive shipping costs nowadays.
“Just Walk Away” sees the Sheffield contingent on Lost In Tyme for the first time, but during this period in their recording process they were down to three members with regular bass guitarist Scott, filling in on drums.
The track steams along at a potent pace with Prisoners inspired organ noise, the usual gruff lead vocals from Chris and some throbbing bass from Scott that reminds me of Jean Jacque Burnell from The Stranglers.
I’d like to see him use this style a lot more on any future gear.
On the other side there’s “Sweet Scotchy Rose”, a rather deep and reflective number with shimmering Rickenbacker jangle.
It’s a departure for The Mourning After, perhaps the only occasion they’ve ventured into folk-punk territory.
The bass rhythms prod in tireless fashion and although the drums are buried deep in the mix they’re tidy and uncluttered allowing the 12 string guitar a certain level of prominence on this significant track.
