Capt. Groovy & His Bubblegum Army – “Captain Groovy & His Bubblegum Army” / “Bubblegum March” (Super K SK4) April 1969
Capt. Groovy & His Bubblegum Army | In my world anything on the Super K label is worth a listen and they usually do contain immaculate bubblegum candy for us all to enjoy, and this marvellous 1969 spring-time release is no exception.
Musicians / producers and all ’round kings of bubblegum, Jerry Kasenetz and Jeff Katz, decided to create their own number with the addition of vocalist Ritchie Cordell.
The rocker “Capt. Groovy & His Bubblegum Army” has that all important, unabating caveman beat. This effectively will get the kids rampaging in the streets or throwing chairs out of their bedroom windows.
The bass lines are fuzz heavy, the tremolo guitar is loud and insidious, and the call-for-arms lead vocals are filled with power and excitement.
Lines like “Join Captain Groovy and his Bubblegum Army is coming to take to take you away.” is a bang-on youth rallying cry.
Unabating Caveman Beat
There’s a monumental king-sized psychedelic guitar break hastening out the number and convincing the bubblegum kids that anything is possible. Just as long as they keep to the chewy chewy beat and upstage the squares.
There are two variants of the US release with differing B-sides. The earliest run of singles has “Bubblegum March (Blowing Bubbles Through Rose Colored Glasses)”. Whilst presumably a second pressing has “Dark Part Of My Mind, Part 1” on the flip.
“Capt. Groovy” was never released in Britain and as a consequence isn’t easy to find. Although Europe did acknowledge it’s greatness and it did enjoy releases in France and Germany, housed in garish picture sleeves.
