The Violet Mindfield – “Those Things You Do” (Rogue Records RR-006) December 2022
According to Rogue Records, The Violet Mindfield hail from somewhere in Southern California. They’ve released a handful of records since their formation around ten years ago but strangely no promotion on their band Facebook page was given to this EP.
In fact no updates have been provided for many months so perhaps The Violet Mindfield have called it quits or at least they’re hibernating in their Californian garages.
There are four self-penned numbers on the record, all written by John Duran, who also mixed and produced the material.
It’s all very lo-fi with sledgehammer sound quality, the songs don’t really have a chance to shine and memorable hooks and melody have been extinguished by the basic and muddy gutter-style creative process. Perhaps this is intentional.
All of the tunes are medium-to-fast paced garage beat and have an undeniable attitude. I can hear many influences but especially early Who and Kinks wildness, especially on “Those Things You Do”, which is my favourite from the set.
