The Lemon Pipers: “Green Tambourine” | The Monocled Alchemist Podcast #72

Meet the Lemon Pipers or The Cincinnati Underground arrives

Lemon Pipers Green Tambourine: And now, ladeeez and gentlemen, the Lemon Pipers will perform their big hit “Green Tambourine” for you by plucking their electric chicken, playing their stringless violin, shuffling their pack of cards, and blowing their minds. Step right up!

Now if you’ll hold your absolutely deafening applause, (Thanks, Mom!”) they will be introduced to you one by one, as they saying goes. Are you READY?

Bill Albaugh, 19, playes the drums, flies a plane and climbs mountains – all at the same time. His hobbies are writing “Happy Birthday” on school buildings across the country.

Notice the strong resemblance to Van Heflin (notice also Van Heflin’s strong resemblance to Bill Albaugh) and the look upon his face that signifies deep thought.

There’s more going on in this boy than meets the eye, in fact, his eyes have never been formally introduced to one another. OK, folks, altogether now – Yeahh!!

Bill Bartlett, 21, lead guitar, born in South Harrow, Middlesex, England, has seven pet cats. He likes to spend his leisure hours burning holes in his bedspread and smoking spinach.

Bill majored in chemistry and mathematics at Syracuse University where he attempted to create an automatic lemon meringue pie; gave up, and turned to music.

He is presently a senior in fine arts at Miami University, where his warnings about The Incredible Monster Orange are ignored. “Fools!”, says Bill. “Why don’t they understand?” He digs Ravi Shankar and aluminium foil.

Hershey bars

Ivan Browne, 20, rhythm guitar and lead singer, lives in a tower with a large bell. He says it gets him up in the morning. Ivan enjoys sword-fishing and chemistry and his best friend is money.

He likes good vocal harmony, Hershey bars, motorcycles, weird clothes and climbing trees. “I’m really Tarzan,” says Ivan.

R.G. Nave, 22, plays the mighty organ, tambourine (green), fog horn and toys. When not appearing on the bandstand he indulges himself in scuba diving and sky diving – as a matter of fact, he often combines them by leaping from a passing blimp into a nearby lake – except when they’re playing near a desert.

A recent jump by Nave into Lake Michigan made such a splash that a 47-pound tuna was washed up on shore and fed the population of Fallen Arch, Wisconsin for an ENTIRE WEEK! For this service he was awarded the Mayor’s medal, underwater.

The Mayor has since taken up scuba diving himself in a vain attempt to get his medal back. Really, folks, hold down on the applause.

Steve Walmsley, 18, bass guitarist, hails from New Zealand. Often in New Zealand he could be heard saying, “Hail!” so they decided he’d better come to America and try to work it out.

A poet, he looks deeply into other people’s minds, feels uncomfortable around adults, and likes to catch passing freight cars, with or without trains.

OK, folks, there they are! The LEMON PIPERS! Now, how about some applause for these fine boys with their big hits on Buddah Records? Ah, that’s wonderful, wonderful. Take a bow, boys. Take another bow. Ooops, they just fell off the stage. That’s all right – they bounce.

As a matter of fact, ladies and gentlemen, The Lemon Pipers are five very intelligent young men with a solid sound and a real interest in all kinds of music. They perform folk ballads, “soul,” psychedelic, blues, country & western and write much of their own material.

Their first record on the Buddah label, “Turn Around, Take A Look” (their own song) established them as a group to keep watching. Now they’re way up on top for everyone to see with “Green Tambourine.” They’ll be up there for quite a long time!
