Heavy Mod | Mojo Presents | (free with magazine) 2009 | PURISTS HAVE ARGUED THAT THE VERY CONCEPT OF being a Mod died in 1963, way before any of its musical devotees had managed to actually record any of their own music.
In most people’s minds, however, 1965 is a watershed year, the movement’s impact burnt into our cultural retina via images of Mods battling greasers on Brighton beach a year earlier and supported by landmark releases by Small Faces and The Who.
But as the ’60s progressed, the movement’s musical standard-bearers developed their sound further, inching away from their initial pop-art concepts into altogether heavier territory.
This bespoke 15 track collection is a celebration of that progression, grouping together some of the scene’s leading lights (Small Faces, The Creation, The Attack, The Move, The Yardbirds et al), as well as artists who have contributed to a wider sound-world that has since been embraced by those who still call themselves Mods today.

Of course, not all the artists featured on this collection have Mod roots. It is, after all, hard to imagine Aphrodite’s Child frontman Demis Roussos as a parka-clad, tonic suit-sporting scooter boy. However, The Four Horsemen has become a firm favourite Mod club favourite in the past 18 months alongside Deep Purple‘s Hush, while latter-day Mods have also professed their admiration for early progressive sounds typified by the aforementioned Aphrodite’s Child and Caravan (Place Of My Own was, in fact, released in the same year as the Small Faces’ Song Of A Baker).
