The Beet Freaks – “A Load Of Hits” (Lost In Tyme Records LIT45-013) February 2022
The Beet Freaks ‘A Load Of Hits’: have been around for about ten years but in that time they’ve only released two four track EPs, so I don’t know a lot about them. For instance this is the only record of theirs that I have in my archive.
It’s time to delve in and learn more about the group.
Well, they’re from Örebro, Sweden and according to their Discogs page play primitive garage. Sometimes that translates as they-can-barely-play their particular brand of rock and roll.
D-I-Y cut-and-paste job
The sleeve of the EP is obviously a D-I-Y cut-and-paste job, which I love by the way and the lads look like they’re no spring chickens and have probably all played in other groups before getting together to form The Beet Freaks.
Without further ado it’s time to place “A Load Of Hits” on the turntable and I’ll make up my own mind.

The opening cut on Side one of the EP is the rather basic “Run And Run” .
This hasn’t got much of a tune, the guitars are fuzzy and the beat is metronomic and uninteresting. A closing song guitar break rescues the number from being completely mundane.
“Wall Of Shame” is very much the same as the previous cut, with a faster pace but less of a tune, crude playing and elementary production. This is all very basic material.
“Hey Little Lover” has a much better sound with ’60s Beat riffing, ringing lead guitar and backing vocals. The song is short and sweet. This is actually a very good beat number and my favourite track on the EP.
The standards are kept high with the slow-paced and mournful “Black Room”. The drums are buried deep in the mix which allows this melancholic song to really hit home.
Overall, a decent record but in my opinion The Beet Freaks are better suited recording moody garage songs than noisy punkers.
