Bobkat ’65 – “Solo Tenias Que Quedarte” / “No Fuimos” (Action Weekend Records AW-035) November 2023
Bobkat ’65 No Fuimos: With virtually no promotion the new line-up of Bobkat ’65 released a new single at the end of last year.
They’ve now added a compact organ player and a new drummer.
The sound hasn’t changed that much, it’s still ’60s styled primitive teen-garage.
This is a shared EP with Los Routes who offer two numbers, “Train Of Thought” and “Better Than Blue,” but their tracks can wait for another time because for now this blog entry is all about my absolute favourites, Bobkat ’65.
The lead-off track is Ana’s self-penned crude garage blast “Solo Tenias Que Quedarte”. This doesn’t have much of a tune but who cares about that when the guitars, drums and organ sound like they do.
The vocals are in Spanish, the rudimentary resonance is pure Bobkat ’65.
No Fuimos
The other tune they have recorded is something they’ve had to delve deep into obscurity for with a tremendous version of “No Fuimos”, a 1965 beat number by Argentinian combo Los Shakers.
The melody shines through. This is a well-played pop gem and serves them well for future recordings as a four piece.
I believe they now have enough acumen and talent for more pure pop delights.
The record cover is a magnificent homage / pastiche based on a release in 1968 by Japanese group The Jacks. Even the original Columbia record label has been cleverly imitated.
This is such a fine release.
