Cornershop | Love You To | (Mojo) 2012

“I was in bed one night and in that limbo moment just before you drift off to sleep. One of the things I find myself doing in those limbo moments is thinking of ideas for songs.

Somehow in that moment I thought it would be good to do a children’s song for Ringo – I was thinking that, and this idea of a yellow submarine, like a kid’s book or something, came into my mind.”

Cornershop | Love You To | (Mojo) | So said Paul McCartney, describing the genesis of one of the tracks that eventually spawned the movie of the same name. The Beatles themselves were the first to admit that their involvement with the Yellow Submarine movie was minimal.

“We were working on our music at the time,” said Paul years later. But the film remains an iconic moment in their history thanks to the vivid imagery created by illustrator Heinz Edelmann.

Bespoke compilation

Furthermore, the movie played up the themes woven throughout Sgt. Pepper. “All you need is love is basically the message of the movie,” explained McCartney.

This bespoke MOJO compilation brings together music from Yellow Submarine’s soundtrack as well as music from that same time period.

It replicates the running order of the Yellow Submarine Songtrack released in 1999 and features a selection of artists hand-picked by MOJO, all of whom were given a freehand to interpret their chosen track and all of whom provide new perspectives on the originals.

Tune in and feel the love . . . (Paul Alexander)

I bought this CD for £3 from a local charity shop, mainly because of the Cornershop cover of “Love You To”, which is the pinnacle track on this MOJO collection from 2012.

Most of the rest of the material on offer ranges from decent to abysmal. The other interpretations worth another listen include “Hey Bulldog” by Bevis Frond, “Think For Yourself” from Buzzcocks leader Pete Shelley and the country-fied “It’s All Too Much” by My Darling Clementine.
